A Taste of Pink

A tropical citrus fruit, named because it grows in grape like clusters. Grapefruit is a cross between a sweet orange and a pummelo, and was introduced to Florida from the Bahamas in 1823. There are two main varieties: seeded and seedless. They are also split into color classifications white (yellowish-white flesh)and pink (flesh ranges from pale yellow-pink to bright ruby red). Pink grapefruit has a higher amount of vitamin A. The skins of all varieties are yellow, some with a pink blush.
Cotton candy was invented in 1897 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton, candy makers from Nashville, Tennessee, USA. They invented a device that heated sugar in a spinning bowl that had tiny holes in it. It formed a treat that they originally called "Fairy Floss." As the bowl spun around, the caramelized sugar was forced through the tiny holes, making feathery candy that melts in the mouth.

Why girls like PINK and guys like BLUE

The idea that little girls like everything in pink while little boys prefer blue appears to have a scientific basis according to a study showing that a person’s colour preference depends largely on their sex.

Scientists have found that women tend to prefer pink – or at least a redder shade – while men prefer blue, and that the gender difference may be down to genes rather than upbringing.

The study investigated the long-held – but until now largely unsupported – view that women and men differ in their colour preferences. It is the first to show that there is a scientific basis for the idea that girls are born with a particular affinity for pink colours.

The researchers, Anya Hurlbert and Yazhu Ling of Newcastle University, said that despite the evidence for differences between the sexes in terms of visual skills, there was no conclusive proof of sex differences in colour preference.

“This fact is perhaps surprising given the prevalence and longevity of the notion that little girls differ from boys in preferring pink,” they say in the academic journal Current Biology.

In the 19th century, babies were all dressed in white; it was much more important that babies be distinguished from adults, whether you were a boy child or a girl child didn’t matter so much. Boys wore dresses, and little boys and girls were dressed alike. At the turn of the century, there were changes in dye and fabric technologies that made it possible to make more colors. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a big discussion about what color should be assigned to what gender. A lot of people felt the quote comes from a Chicago trade journal. “Pink is for boys and blue is for girls.” Some people think it’s because red is a power color, and pink is a watered-down red. Blue was considered more dainty.So this was an argument among commercial entities. Among the trade journals, the greeting card companies, people who were making products. Apparently, it wasn’t until after World War II when the very powerfully separate color-coding happened, where pink is for girls and blue is for boys. Now, parents really want to know if it’s a girl or a boy, and they want to use clothing to communicate that. There are a couple different theories about it. One theory actually says that the thing that put the stamp on it was I don’t know if you’re familiar with the two portrait painters Thomas Lawrence and Thomas Gainsborough. Henry Huntington was a railroad magnate and art collector. He purchased “Pinkie” and “Blue Boy” and brought them to his mansion in California. Apparently, one of the historians said that the media publicity surrounding the installation of these two paintings side by side is what cemented the color-coding of blue is for boys and pink is for girls.
